A POST ABOUT DOGS, #27,492

Oliver is exactly 40 pounds. I weighed him today. I think, for a two-year-old male Beagle, that might be a little high. Beagles tend to have excess skin around their neck, but I think I'd be able to pull his neck-skin over his snout and tie it in a knot...if I were so inclined...which I'm not.

A friend of mine suggested that I feed El Gordo two raw chicken wings per day--one in the morning and one in the evening. The first thing that came to my mind was the slinky evil of the word Salmonella. I think, before I go the route of raw fowl, I may try to give the kid a little more exercise. He sleeps a lot. And he eats a lot. Bring the two facets of his uproariously-active canine life together and what do you have?! A fat-assed dog. Seriously, when he is sitting placidly on the floor, and I am looking down on him from above, he looks like a giant foreshortened fur-covered pear, replete with a peanut head and deep trusting melting eyes.

Fur-covered pear. Yeah. That about sums it up.

Meanwhile, Lou is rapier-sharp. This odd couple just keeps getting odder and odder.

my in-laws have a tubby beagle as well. i tell them they got a two-fer, as in a beagle and a basset hound all in one!

Maybe you should cut his carbs.

Maybe you and Ollie can do some yoga together? There used to be this show on Animal Planet with this hot blonde chick who owned a doggy yoga place.

It was a little weird and even kinda creepy, but her dog did seem to enjoy it.

Will you take me for a walk too? :P My life's a lot like Ollie's lately.

I missed seeing the boys last weekend. I'll chase Ollie around next time (leaping over poop piles if need be) and we'll both get some exercise. Kisses to both.

So are you going to change their names to Oscar and Felix? ;P

Your dogs are INSANELY cute!!! And I love your description of the fur-covered pear.

My puppa was getting a little chunk-o too, so I started feeding her the weight-loss food the vet recommended. After eating it for maybe a week, she quit eating and vomited and had, uh, bowel problems nonstop for three days, requiring emergency hospitalization-- she almost died! Turns out, that food ended up on the pet food recall list a month later.

She lost a bunch of weight, quickly, that way, but I do NOT recommend it! I'd rather have her fat and happy than runny and miserable... or worse.

Kisses to the puppy snouts!

Tia: Well, your in-laws should be very very pleased, then. :-)

Kane of Suge Knight: I guess I'll start with the potatoe chips that he shoves endlessly into his gaping maw whilst watching Animal Planet. ;-)

What dog *wouldn't* enjoy doing yoga with a hot chick, Jay? They don't call it Doggie Style--er, the Dog position--for nothin! ;-)

Sure will, Heather. I'll see you in BC in a couple of days. =o)

And they missed you, Melmac the Great...and they missed you. :*(

LOL, Nighthawk. Those names fit them to a tee. Seriously. But I think I'll stick with the names to which they respond 38% of the time. ;-)

JenBun: Thanks for the canine compliments. :-) They're blushing now. I'm sorry to hear that your dog had to go through that but I'm glad the Zeph-ster is doing well. :-) And, yes, better to be fat and playful than thin and dead. :-\

Don't hate on your dog for being a fur covered pear. The only difference between him and I is that I have less... hair... (*sigh*).

I was always told that I wasn't supposed to feed my dogs chicken bones because they would splinter and get caught in their throat. Old wives tale?

Adamity73 said...

That's what I thought, too, IF. I guess--from what I heard--the raw bones aren't a problem, but the cooked ones are (because they're more brittle). I dunno....

NO CHICKEN BONES! None none! None! raw or cooked! No! Evil!
*ahem*

Anyway, dogs can digest raw meat better than we can, and don't have to worry about that kind of shit. However... ew... I don't understand how feeding him raw meat is going to help him lose weight.

I would say just cut him down to the lower calorie version of his food (Kobe was getting pudgy, now he eats the "healthy weight" version of his food, and he's fine).
But yeah.
No chicken bones...

Can I have a pear? I'm starving! I haven't eaten all day. At this point I'll take the hair too. Just infuse the pear in a fever reducer and it's all mine! nom nom nom!

Thanks for the vehemence, Caleal. ;-) So...did you name your dog after the incredible basketballer Kobe Bryant?

Um, you okay, Tizzy? :-P Nom nom nom, indeed. :)

Anonymous said...

No... his name is just Kobe because it's a good name. No basketball or beef references here. :)

dogs are immune to salmonella. they eat their own poop for cryin' put loud. dont worry. its safe. i have tried it.

Caleal: I see. =o)

Lisa: LOL Good point.

the vet said that raw chicken bones are okay as long as they are RAW and that they are not leg or thigh bones.

Chicken bones aside, I just don't understand how feeding him chicken is going to make him lose weight... I eat it all the freaking time and it doesn't do anything for me.

Caleal, u gotta eat the chicken and only the chicken. Think of it like Atkins for dogs. MMMmmmmm chicken.
